Then

It never was the purpose of the night
yet needle scratched, as birdsong woke up dawn,
and sent us back to sleep until dusk

We ate what found, sometimes stale soda bread
for toast, with thick butter and drizzled honey,
the fridge could hold surprises on a Tuesday.

Somewhere our song is painted on a kitchen wall
